Biography

With a polished background in art, Taiwanese director Hsu Chin-Liang (Tchii Ching-Long) has enjoyed remarkable success in both the movie and television industry for almost forty years. Born in Taipei, December of 1944, he displayed a brilliant sense for art at an early age. By the time he was enrolled in the National Taiwan Normal University, he took top prize for sculpting. His interest in the movie industry led him to promotional and marketing work for American and European films during his college years. In 1970, he won a gold medal in Rome¡¦s International Art Festival and in the same year, under the sponsor of Italian television station RAI (Radio Televisione Italiano), directed a Venice Film Festival nominee La Spada Del Gran Silenzio. Since 1971, he returned to his Taiwanese homeland and directed over twenty movies, including Somewhere in Deep Clouds, Spring Winds, Family Lineage, Endearing Vows, A Young Guy Who Refuses The Entrance Exam, The Voices of Youth, and several other critically and commercially acclaimed films. He is considered the pioneer of Taiwanese student films.

Hsu made his jump to television in 1985 and has produced numerous chart-topping prime time television drama, including the hugely popular Postman Rings Twice series that prompted a trend of comedy TV. Successive dramas such as The God of Wealth Arrives, Dear, I¡¦ve Changed the Hero into Beauty, and Tonight I¡¦ll be Laughing in My Dream pushed his success to its peak. Demonstrating his range, his locally based Taiwanese dramas such as Hero Family, Taiwan Legends of Suai-Pu, Taiwan Historical Legends, and Big Sister is Boss were the highest rated series in the nation.

In 2004, his production Brothers and Sisters received the highest ratings and TV longevity that Taiwan TV station has seen in recent years.

Several years ago, he applied his accomplished artistic background to the experimentation of computer animation and special effects with astounding results. His production Wind and Cloud shattered worldwide sales record by a Chinese television series. He is also considered the godfather of Taiwanese animation.

Engaging with films and television for over thirty years, Hsu Chin-Liang built his career with a clear sense of the market, the global interest, and the most updated trend. In the future, he will continue his production utilizing 2D and 3D technology on films and television, suitable for the Chinese community, Asian community, and international community, along with various side products to produce the greatest profits.
